Miles B. Cooper Finalist for SFTLA Trial Lawyer of the Year Award
Emison Cooper & Cooper congratulates their colleague Miles B. Cooper on his nomination for the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association (SFTLA) Trial Lawyer of the Year Award.
Miles was nominated for a unique and difficult case involving a pub’s XXX Spicy Burger Challenge. The pub’s contest resulted in our client suffering catastrophic injuries when the pub failed to take adequate safety precautions to protect customers. There were many factual and evidentiary complications — including a signed waiver — that made the case challenging.
Miles and his co-counsel persuaded a San Mateo jury that the pub did not adequately ensure customer safety when challenging its patrons to eat an entire spicy burger and get their photo up on “The Wall of Flame.”
The result, after a three-week trial, was a verdict for over $1 million. The pub also promised to remove the spicy burger from its menu.
